Spotting Signs of the Presence of Termites
ShareIf you don't get termite treatment right on your property the first time, then it can lead to some major expense. Drywood termites, for example, can cause a huge amount of structural damage if they start to chomp their way through supporting timbers in your home. Therefore, it is always best to call upon the services of a professional pest control service as soon as you have detected termites in, or close to, your property.
You could try using certain insecticides and baits to get rid of them. However, these methods usually have limited success unless you are experienced in pest control measures. Therefore, early detection of the presence of termites is essential if you want to be rid of them before untold damage is caused. What are the main signs to look out for?
Look Out For Shifted Earth
Subterranean termites tend to build nests under piles of logs that you might store outside for firewood. They also like to make their homes underneath old tree stumps. If you notice any earth that has been moved close to such wood, then it is highly likely that termites are present. Even under the ground, such creatures can cause damage to your home's foundations. Therefore, even though they may seem far enough away, it is worth getting an expert opinion as to whether or not termite treatment is needed.
Spot Entry Holes
Termites that might be living in your home are likely to have colonised the wooden parts of it. Therefore, you should make a frequent inspection of your weatherboarding, rafters, purlins and even floorboards. If you notice small holes in any of these timbers, then it may well be that you have termites inside. Any holes that look like someone has been throwing darts around is likely to have been caused by termites entering the wood.
Listen for Termites Chewing
Another thing that you may notice when you enter a room that has been quiet up until that point is a vibrating or clicking noise. If you detect this and then it goes quiet when you make a sound, then it is probable that you have disturbed a colony of termites in your home that is eating its way through your timber supports. You must take immediate action if you noticed this because it could well mean that the termite infestation is already well-developed. Professionals experienced in termite treatment should be called in without delay.
