What Signs of Termites Should You Look Out For?

Termites are found all over Australia. There are many species that are native to the country but they tend to fall into two main categories: those which live underground and those which live inside wood. It is important to regularly inspect your property for signs of termites, especially if they have been detected elsewhere in your neighbourhood. Call in a pest inspection expert if you are in any doubt because inaction will often mean that the colony size will balloon out of control. Early interventions following a pest inspection for termites will mean much less drastic actions need to be taken. On the other hand, if you don't notice them until they have already caused lots of damage to your property, then you are likely to be faced with a large repair bill. What should you look out for during your pest inspection?

Bore Holes

Many species of termites that bore into woodwork will leave a telltale hole behind them. Have a close look at the walls of your garden shed or the weatherboarding on the outside of your home, for example, and keep an eye out for these entry points. If you notice something that looks like someone has pushed drawing pins into the wood, then it is likely that one of the 419 species of drywood termites will have caused it. Tap on the surrounding wood, and if it sounds hollow, then there are probably termites eating your timbers inside, potentially undermining the structural integrity of your building as they go.

Buzzing Sounds

Another important aspect of any pest inspection is to use your ears as well as your eyes. Termites which have got into your walls or roof cavity are hard to spot as they are hidden out of view. However, if you enter a room quietly and notice a buzzing or humming noise, then it could be a sign that termites are present. When you turn the light on or make a sound, termites will tend to stop making any noise immediately. If this happens, you'll need to call in a professional pest controller without delay.

Flaking Paint

Paint and varnish will often prevent termites from boring into timbers. However, if you have not refreshed your paintwork for a few years, then termites will be able to get into the wood underneath. During your property inspection, look for sections of paint that have flaked or bubbled up prematurely. If you see these symptoms, then it could be that termites are the cause.

Reach out to a professional for a pest inspection if you suspect you have termites.
